Character Compass
A guided journey that helps players build a Dungeons & Dragons character, from first idea to final sheet.
Character Compass is a website that guides players through the process of creating a Dungeons & Dragons character, starting with a simple idea and helping shape it into something ready to be brought into a character sheet. Rather than beginning with mechanics, the experience encourages players to first think about who their character is, then shape the game’s systems around that idea.
The site is structured as a journey across a series of fictional locations, each representing a step in the process. Players begin in Backstory Bay, considering where their character has been, before moving through Personality Peninsula and Goal Grove to define who they are and what drives them. From there, the experience transitions into the mechanical side of the game, including Background Brook, Race Ravine, Class Canyon, and Subclass Sahara, where players use built-in resources to translate their ideas into playable choices.
To support different experience levels, users can choose between beginner, intermediate, and expert paths. Each adjusts the amount of guidance provided, helping new players learn the
process while allowing experienced players to move more freely.
The goal of Character Compass is to reframe character creation as storytelling first, using the mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons to support the character, rather than define it.
Character Compass guides players through the process of creating a Dungeons & Dragons character, helping them develop a strong concept before translating it into a character sheet.
